Trezor Launches Quantum-Ready Safe 7 Wallet with Open-Source Secure Element
Trezor unveiled its SAFE 7 hardware wallet in Prague, marking a significant advancement in cryptocurrency security. The device features a fully open-source secure element and post-quantum firmware signing, challenging industry norms of closed, NDA-protected hardware.
The SAFE 7 integrates the Tropic01 chip, developed by Trezor-backed startup Tropic Square. Unlike proprietary solutions from STMicroelectronics or Infineon, Tropic01's design is fully auditable—researchers can purchase and test the chip without restrictive NDAs. "No one is going to lie to you about its security," said Trezor CTO Tomas Susanka. "You can now verify."
The launch culminates Trezor's decade-long critique of opaque hardware practices. The company claims previous experiments with commercial chips exposed undisclosed vulnerabilities, prompting their shift to self-designed components. This MOVE establishes new transparency benchmarks for wallet security amid growing quantum computing threats.
